Rhizome of PLnellia temata (Thunb.) Breit. family Araceae. Prepared by drying after the cortex is peeled off, as crude Pinellia; or by soaking in water and then in ginger juice and alum water to decrease its toxicity and then dried, as Pinellia preparatae.

Characteristics
Rhizome oblate, 0.5-1.5 cm in diameter. Surface yellowish white, apex with shallow discoidal stem scars, densely iurrounded by dotted root scars. Fracture surface white and farinaceous. Yellowish brown after preparation, and becoming cuticular, fibrous root scars invisible. Acrid in taste, warm in nature, toxic, and attributive to spleen, stomach and lung channels.

Indication
1. Deprive dampness and eliminate phlegm: For dampness-phlegm and cold-phlegm syndromes with productive cough and thin expectoration, used together with Pericarpium Citri Rettculatae, Poria for dampness domination, and together with Herba Asari, Rhizoma Zingiberis for cold domination; for phlegm-heat syndrome with productive cough, used together with Fructus Trichosanthis, Radix Scutellariae, etc.
2. Lower the adverse-rising energy to stop vomiting: For vomiting of phlegm-dampness type, used together with Pericarphium Citri Reticutatae and Poria; for that of cold type, used together with Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens and Ros Ca'yophylli; for that of heat type, used together with Rhizoma Coptidis and Caulis Bambuscae in Taeniam; for that of sthenia type, used together with Radix Codonopsis Pilosukie.
3. Disperse stagnation and lumps: For chest pain, used together with Frudus Trichosanthis; for globus hystericus, used together with Folium Perillae, Poria and Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis; for subcutaneous and nobule and goiter, used together with Bulbus Fritillariae Thunbergii Sargassum.
4. Eliminate toxic material, disperse lumps and relieve carbuncle (external use): For skin infection, scrofuJa and snake bite.

Pharmacological Action
1. Its decoction relieves cough in experimental cat
2. The decoction of prepared and crude drug exerts an antiemetic effect in pigeons and dogs.

Administration Decoction: 3-9g.
External use: Appropriate amount.
