What Is Inborn Nature?
(Excerpt from book Discourse On Chuang Tzu / Chapter 25 Tseh-Yang)

Hand a mirror to a person born with handsome appearance, he would not realise that he was better looking than others without being told. It seems, his own appearance is both known and unknown; it seems, he has heard of it and also not heard. However, what is delightful remains unchanged to the end, while the admiration of others knows no end — this is inborn nature. The sage loves others, and so, men endow him with titles, but if nothing would be said he would never be aware that he loves others. It seems he knows it, yet it seems he does not know it; it seems he hears of it, yet it seems he does not hear of it. Irregardless, his love for others remains constant and unchanged, and others endlessly bathe in his soothing love — it is simply a matter of inborn nature.

One’s native land, the old hometown — even a mere glimpse from afar, is enough to send joy coursing through veins. If unkempt weeds and tangled forests crowd its hills and pastures, and nine out of ten of those once known should lie beneath the soil, even still, one's heart lifts with joy. How much greater would this then be, to glimpse a fraction of the quintessence of that which fosters seeing, hears that which fosters hearing.

生而美者,人与人鉴,不告则不知其美于人也。若知之,若不知之,若闻之,若不闻之,其可喜也终无已,人之好之亦无已,性也。圣人之爱人也,人与之名,不告,则不知其爱人也。若知之,若不知之,若闻之,若不闻之,其爱人也终无已,人之安之亦无已,性也。

旧国旧都,望之畅然;虽使丘陵草木之缗,入之者十九犹之畅然。况见见闻闻者也,以十仞之台县众间者也。
